Celebration Of Life Warli
![]() Medium: Acrylics on Canvas Size: 36" x 48" Price framed: SOLD This
is a scene of a wedding day
in the Warli tribe. The center structure is a temple with an embodiment
of the Nature God. The groom is arriving seated on a beautifully
decorated horse. Along with him are joyous friends and family members,
celebrating the occassion, bringing gifts and dancing to the tunes of
drums and shenais. The bride is busy getting read, preparing to look
her finest on the biggest day of her life, as she seeks blessings of
the Goddess of fertility. Her family is equally happy, sharing their
happiness with everyone in the village. It is a Celebration of Life, of
fesitivity and love.
Warli is a tribal art form by the people of Warli tribe. They live in the western part of India in the state of Maharashtra. Warli paintings have been a tradition that dates back to more than four thousand years ago. They use just circles, to depict the sun and the moon, and triangles, to depict mountains, trees, to produce beautiful works of art. They paint on walls by first preparing them with cow dung and mud and then using rice flour and water to draw with bamboo sticks. Most Warli paintings depict scenes from daily life. Traditional Warli paintings hence have a dark brown background and a white foreground. In my case, I have tried to depict the union between this tradition and modern life. I have experimented with adding black to the traditional white. The backgrounds of varied colors and textures indicate modern times. |
