Kiddie sayings … Jab main choti bacchi thi….

When we were kids Mummy told us that all guests were to be treated with respect, asked to come in and offered food. So, one sunday morning, this stray dog walks to the entrance of our house, I let him come in and go tell Mummy, “Ma, doggyJi aaye hain. Unko kuch khana do.” (i.e. respected dog is here, please give him some food)

On one of those rides on the Bajaj scooter with Papa, I saw some goats with a cloth wrapped around their breast. I think now that the farmers did that to prevent the lambs from drinking too much milk. So, amongst all those goats, there was one that didn’t have this cloth. I turned to Papa and said, “Shame! Shame! woh bakri in underwear nahi pehni!” (i.e. that goat didn’t wear her underwear).

We used to live in an area where there was lots of load shedding and power cuts. I asked Mummy, “Ma, didi kahaan hai? ” Ma replied, “Woh balcony mein hawa kha rahi hai.” So, I went to the balcony and started chewing. Looking at me Didi asked, “Yeh kya kar rahi hai tu?”. I replied, “Ma ne kaha tu hawa kha rahi hai, to main bhi hawa kha rahi hoon.” (i.e. Ma said you were having air, so I’m having air too!)

We used to live near a pond and Mummy was always worried about us kids getting too close to the pond. Once, Didi was spotted by a neighbor going towards the pond with a stick in her hand. Mummy went running behind her and thankfully found her in time and asked where she was headed. Didi replied, “Oh! main to woh talaab ki gehraai napne jaa rahi thi is lakdi se.” (i.e. I was going to measure how deep that pond is with this stick).
